The Old Rugged Cross

I am preasching at the rest home tomorrow, and here is the outline I am using, taking sections of the song The Old Rugged Cross and putting verses with each section.

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,

John 19:17-18 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the center.

the emblem of suffering and shame;

       Mark 15:15-19 and he [Pilate] delivered Jesus, after he had scourged Him, to be crucified. Then the soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium, and they called together the whole garrison. And they clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of thorns, put it on His head, and began to salute Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” Then they struck Him on the head with a reed and spat on Him
Hebrews 12:2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

and I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

I John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
I Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed.

I Peter 3:19 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit

I Peter 4:1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind,

Refrain:
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.

Yes very cool,

How large an audience do you tend to see at the rest home?

Today was one of the biggest groups that I've seen on a Sunday afternoon. We had about 30 residents attend the service. There was one Sunday I remember when we only had 12. There are a number of churches in the area who rotate the services, so each church does the service every two months. I've been preaching there every two months for about seven years.

Very good! I am contemplating the idea of doing something like this for each of the hymns in my Timeless Gospel Hymns project. Your outline here is the perfect size for the idea.
