Honesty and Ethics

Way back in 1968 when I first entered the ministry the American public viewed the clergy as honest and ethical (the number was around 70%).

Last year that opinion of the clergies honesty and ethical integrity had dropped to just 45%!!!

What has changed? Why do you think the number has fallen? What would say needs to change in order to reverse this trend?

Re: Honesty and Ethics

Could social media, even such as forums like this, play a role in the change? We used to get news more filtered by major news outlets, because we had no connections to the world other than newspapers ,TV, radio, and talking in person or by letters to friends. We only heard about mistakes made by authority figures if the media thought it important enough for the news. Now, any little mistake gets filmed and becomes viral and we don't always get the full story. But it's not just little mistakes that get overblown. It is also the big mistakes, including crimes and corruption, which we should know about, that get passed along.

The good things that people do rarely get passed along as much as the bad things. Pastors are supposed to be kind and generous, and most are, but that kindness does not go viral as much as the bad stuff. Since we have become more aware of the failings of people in authority, we naturally are less likely to be trusting of people in authority.

I'm not sure we should worry too much about needing to adjust the trend. Look at it this way. My opinion of politicians in general may be worse than it was 10 years ago, but I may still think that my own representative is doing a good job. It's those OTHER politicians that have gone bad. People may think that, as a general group, the clergy are worthy of less respect, but they may still highly value their own personal relationship with a clergy member. They wouldn't consider their OWN guy to be one of the dishonest or unethical ones.
